term 3

News Tues 6th July

Kaniva’s Neighbourhood House will be releasing its brochure for Term Three this week with some great new classes on offer.

Farmers are encouraged to register their interest for the Don’t Be A Drifter, Farm Ready course on August 23rd. Link Co-ordinator Kerryn Dyer commented “Craig Day from Spray Safe and Save in conjunction with the Grains Industry Training Network and LINK will be bringing this great workshop to the Kaniva area.” The 2 day course will give spray applicators the latest in information about nozzles, machinery set up and the new APVMA label requirements. The workshop also meets Chemical Reaccreditation Requirements. In the last 12 months, over 400 farmers have taken part in the program and have found the course has been very practical and has helped to reduce their chemical bills. The workshop will be run by Craig Day who farms at Greenthorpe in NSW. After completing Ag Science at Charles Sturt Uni he became a trainer and to ensure his training was relevant he became a spray contractor. Craig commented “I train as if you were doing the job, and in the workshop we discuss everything and plan it out. We discuss the records required to meet state and federal requirements. The really valuable bit is putting the theory into practice in the on farm part.”

Assistant Co-ordinator Anita Condon is also excited about the upcoming Art Therapy Workshop, “This will be an innovative 2 session program which will provide an opportunity to experience Art Therapy processes and techniques to integrate into your work and home life. It is a particularly worthwhile program for community and health workers or for artists and those wishing to learn techniques for their own wellbeing.” The course is just $40 which includes materials..

The Purple Starfish Saturday Morning workshops are continuing to be well supported and will start back on 17th July. The workshops are for 10 -15 year olds with the Purple Starfish Community Shop meeting the cost of craft supplies. The projects costs are kept to a minimum by using recycled and donated goods and the group are presently looking for plain, brightly coloured pieces of material that people may no longer need. Project ideas are driven by the group and the 17th July will include planning Term 3 as well as finishing off the Paper-MLearn German ache mobile phone/ IPod holder novelty chair. Once planned, the program will be advertised on the Link window and the Purple Starfish Facebook page.

New for Term 3 is a ‘2 Day Beginners Quilting Workshop’ with expressions of interest invited. Also new and exciting will be Tai Chai with Barbera Champness who runs the gentle exercise class. Roger Murray will once again be running the First Aid Course with a Mental Health First Aid Course planned for 27th and 28th September. The Mental Health First Aid Course will be ran by Debbie Armstrong and aims to teach first aid skills for mental health crisis situations and early stages of mental health problems.
